Free Tuition

 Free tuition. What's your thoughts?

One of our southern towns, right down the bottom of the South Island offers free tuition in order to attract students. It seems to work for them and brings spending power into the city as well as more people during the school term.

College tuition is out of control. I went to a private college that was expensive back in the day and now there's no way my parents could've afforded it.
My only concern - where does the money come from? Higher taxes?

I am completely on board with this...

It's a lovely thought, but where does the money come from? Donations? Bake sales? Taxes?

It is nuts down there, here it is bad enough but wacko down there. I'd say yes but then they'd get taxed to death

Why don't we just plant tomatoes on the Moon so we can feed the world and it will not be necessary to educate anyone? We can take the money from those who earned it and open Stalin University for those who are more equal.

Hahaha, on the bake sales. Some schools now won't even allow home-baked goods, anymore.

Rubbish.

I am all for it! Germany and many other European nations have free tuition and they are taught better than many people in North America. Canada used to be quite decent but now the tuition is so high i would never have been able to go if I had to today because of the costs. Money should not be a hindrance to education provided the kids learn and don't use it for beer bomb Saturdays

Tuition is ludicrous here, all public colleges should be free. Just like public schools. Especially since all these stupid college teams make so much money in stadium events and tshirts/hats/etc.

I never would trust a republican on advancing higher education. The same reason why Kings never wanted to the common people to be able to read. They don't want the masses to realize how badly their screwing them.

That is wonderful, Shelley.

Yes, I think Obama is going to try to tax the wealthy, but so far that hasn't met with a lot of success. I don't know about other states but another way of offsetting the cost is if the community colleges get a bigger piece of the state pie. NC pours its money into the 4 year schools and very little goes to the 2 year schools.

Sandra Cox said...

All of the above, CJ:) grin.
Again, I think some of the funds should be recycled from all the state money that's poured into 4 year schools.

Me too, OE.

That's sad, Ivy.

It's certainly a problem, Pat. I don't know if my daughter will ever be without education debt. Oh wait, they told her when she turns 80, it can be wiped out.

Sandra Cox said...

Tomatoes on the moon....well I guess that's an option. grin.

Sandra Cox said...

I agree with that completely, Birgit. And especially with a two year cap.

Sandra Cox said...

If they can get tuition free community colleges it would be a great start, wouldn't it, Adam?

The Happy Whisk said...

It is. They say allergies as the reason, but that can be an issue with crappy, shit grocery store bakes, as well.

Looking at how much college had cost me several years back and looking at how much it costs my brothers now, it's a significant difference. I would love if they had the chance to go to college for free and save up what money they could earn to pay for books and living expenses. Everything here in the SF Bay Area is terribly expensive!

I can certainly relate, Anna. My daughter went to a private school then out of state. Her loans are horrific.
