IWSG Wednesday

The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Members post about their  doubts and fears, discuss struggles and triumphs, and offer words of encouragement to others who are struggling.
Since I wrote on a different topic last month, I'm going to post on September's question: How do you find the time to write in your busy day?
The answer for me is really quite simple. I have no life.
Actually, that's an exaggeration, it should be I had no life. Grin. Since I've retired though, time to write isn't such an issue.
After the kids had left the nest, and before I'd retired, I went to work, came home and wrote. On weekends, I got up and spent most of the day and evening writing, and hoped for the sake of the house, no one dropped by unannounced:)
I can remember writing in the parenting days. Like most working moms, I wrote at every opportunity--when  I wasn't working, there weren't student activities and or family outings. I wrote on my lunch hour, waiting in the car for a child, waiting at the doctor's office, etc.
Being a working-parent-writer is not for wimps. So to the parents who work and write full time kudos.  My hat is off to you.

I know exactly what you mean about finding time to write.
Once one has retired you either sit down and vegetate or do something constructive. Great post Sandra.

I don't know how people with kids do it. I'm in awe.

I used to be in that position. Self-employed but time to write. Now I'm self-employed with no time to write.

I have no life too lol if I had kids I'd sure have to tweak the amount I put out

That pretty much sums it up:)
Thanks, Yvonne;)

Perfect. I remember those days well of having no life, no time. And because I wrote all day for a living, writing "after work" wasn't my favorite thing, apart from the blog. I think that applies to everything -- writing, art, developing hobbies. I'm so glad that you finally have the life that allows you to do exactly what you love -- and a lot of other things, too!

Sandra, I could write a book here about writing and publishing, but I am so very sure the industry has changed much. Short stories didn't sell back while I was writing, but now it seems they are back in vogue. Myself, I thought how to find the time to write and be creative, when you are dealing with the business end? That was a problem to be solved.

We all appreciate that. Thank you, EC.

Hello Sandra, I love your quote from Nelson Mandela. You found the right rhythm for yourself and you wrote whenever you could. Great.

LOL!! Great post, Sandra. It's amazing how we had bags of energy when we needed it, isn't it? Nowadays I'm shattered after looking after my 3 year old god-daughter for a day - and my own daughter only left the fold 6 years ago. How quickly we forget :)

Can you imagine single parenting? Talk about challenging.

Sandra Cox said...

You have a lot of irons in the fire, that's for sure.

Sandra Cox said...

You need more heads to wear all those hats:)

Sandra Cox said...

That's okay, Pat. You've got enough of a back list built up, you could take a couple of years off:)

Sandra Cox said...

Thanks, Jeanie:) Me too.

Sandra Cox said...

You are so right, Donna. Short stories are very popular right now. And the business end does tend to put a damper on the muse. Sigh.

Sandra Cox said...

Thanks, Pat. Mandela was a very, very wise man wasn't he?

I think it's an affliction most of us that write have, don't you, Chrys? :)

This is my first time here. I've joined your blog now. I remember writing while my five kids were at various appointments or during their sports games. I agree with your picture. It is impossible until it's done. Thanks for sharing. All the best!

Sandra Cox said...

Oh boy, I hear ya on the energy or lack there of after dealing with the little ones. If they could only figure out a way to share that energy with us, hey?

Sandra Cox said...

Welcome, Victoria. So glad you stopped by. And many thanks for the follow.

Sandra Cox said...

You are on the go, that's for sure:)

I don't have time for my life because of all the lives I create in my work. Nope. It's not fair. :-)

Finding time to write is tricky with work, but I try to find the time when I can. I would like some more time though and hope I can carve out some larger chunks soon! :)

Hi Janet! How are you?
I imagine running a business would take every spare minute. Yes, I have much more time at my disposal these days. I recommend retirement for everyone.
