Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures is about three African American women  mathematicians  and the  vital roles they played in the space program.  It was an amazing movie that carried an emotional punch on many levels.  I had no idea what problems NASA  faced to get the first American astronaut into the atmosphere.  Nor the day-to-day impact of segregation.
The intelligence of the three women the movie is based on leaves me in awe.  Katherine Johnson started high school at age ten, graduated at fourteen and graduated from West Virginia State College at age eighteen.  Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan were also highly intelligent women who broke through the gender-color barrier.  I don't want to mention much more in case you haven't seen the movie.  But if you have seen it and are curious about how closely the movie followed the actual events, historyvshollywood did an interesting article on the film.

Highly recommended.

Wink and A Nod Thursday

I'm going to do a repeat. When I ran this post last fall I had a broken link and very few people saw it. So......without further adieu, this week's Wink and A Nod Recipient is Stephanie Faris.
Besides being a children's author, she's a freelance writer, enjoys dogs and loves butterflies.  Many of you are already familiar with Stephanie's blog but for those who aren't she ALWAYS has something interesting to say. If you haven't been to her blog, I highly recommend it.

Wink, wink, Stephanie.

Vegetarian Protein And Wonder Woman

Do you use this product?

I just recently discovered it and love it. It has from 23 to 27 grams of protein and can be used in a hot dish or cold.  I toss in a couple of different cheeses, some veggies and put it on my salads.

What do you do for protein?

On a different topic we went to see Wonder Woman this weekend.  I was hesitant to because I didn't care for Batman VS Superman where she's first introduced. Then I saw Alex Cavanaugh's review and decided to give it a go.  I'm so glad I did.  On a one to five I'd give it a six.  It's a great action flick. And talk about a feminist super hero:)  Coming from an Amazon society, she just doesn't get the it's a man's world thing. Spoiler alert: If you're a Chris Pine fan there's a sad scene. Still highly recommended.
Thanks, Alex.

IWSG Wednesday

The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Members post about their doubts and fears, discuss struggles and triumphs, and offer words of encouragement to others who are struggling.

My post this month is just for fun and--sorry guys--geared toward the female populace in the blogosphere.  Have you seen the book charm bracelets that are gaining popularity? Steven King. Nancy Drew. Agatha Christie. Etc. I decided I wanted one with my books. I discovered Robin Smetana  on twitter, contacted her and asked if she could make me a bracelet.  She had it made in twenty-four hours.  And she was such a joy to work with, professional, pleasant and energetic.
This is what I ended up with:

Before I discovered Robin, I had ordered this charm. I liked it, but it was a LONG time from order to delivery. The cost was eight dollars including shipping and handling, which wasn't bad for one charm, but I would have needed twenty-five and a bracelet.  Yikes! Needless to say I was thrilled to find Robin whose prices were/are very reasonable....And I love her work.
What about you. Got any fun pieces of jewelry or novelties you'd like to share?

Answer to Yesterday's Question:

3 is the normal response.  For most (of) us, the brain doesn't process the word OFIt's a sticky note that doesn't normally adhere to the brain.

We've got a smart crowd. Lots of you figured it out.  I fell in the 3 category, which I guess makes me normal--whatever normal may be:)

Memorial Day and Monster Kitty Tail

Monster Kitty Tail #5...(Or Whatever # We're On):
We had a tornado warning in our area last week and while I was busy herding the outside kitties inside, Franky was busy running out.  Sigh.

Us Against Them

I don't know what it's like at your household but here it's us against them, man against beast, survival of the get the drift. As previously mentioned, the cat and dog got so bad about getting in the cabinets, including the upper cabinets, we had to have someone come in and magnetize the doors.
The rebellion quelled....Until....
They turned to the pantry. But since we, of course, are smarter than mere animals--cough,cough, hack, hack, choke, choke--we started propping a heavy chair in front of the door.
Problem solved.
Unfortunately, the instigator A.K.A. Monster Kitty convinced the dog to move the chair for him so he could make a foray into the forbidden area where the food--human and animal--is stored.  Since the dog is a bit of a schmuck she fell in with the plan.  This happened several times, till we finally came to the realization there would have to be another outlay of cash to solve the problem.
We had a dead bolt installed. Done and done. Until......
He turned his attention to my couch.
It's war.
You can see how much being in the Penalty Box bothers Monster Kitty.  He occasionally goes in it voluntarily to take a nap and it's where I frequently find  his ill gotten gains, er, treasurers.

What about your house? Are you dealing with uprisings in your household?

And totally off topic, I'm at Free Kindle Books and Tips Today.  If you do popover would you give the post a Facebook like on the blog's website?  It helps get the word out.

Yes, It's Monday

Did all the moms out there have a great Mother's Day?
It was a good one here.  I got to see the Grands Saturday and then the HH and I went to a winery for Lunner (Lunch/Dinner) Sunday. They had a special buffet that was amazing. There were four serving tables set up in two rooms: breakfast, appetizers, dinner and dessert.
The HH got the bill and his eyes crossed, though there were a couple of bottle of wines we purchased to take home on it. We topped off the afternoon with a trip to Lowes and the purchase of a sunflower plant. Then back to the world of everyday and laundry.
How did you celebrate your day?
